Biography
Cathey Cassady Stoney is surrounded by the mountains of Western North Carolina and nature. She finds inspiration and encouragement in the landscapes she loves. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the University of North Carolina- Asheville and her Art Education degree from Converse College, Spartanburg SC.
For artist Cathey Stoney, painting is a language to explore the natural world. Her paintings are visual explorations of common themes examined through the lens of abstraction. By employing visual elements she creates pathways that lead viewers to calm spaces, allowing them to connect with their imagination, thoughts, and emotions.
Cathey's work is process-driven and multi-layered, focusing on mark-making, layering, and employing various techniques to engage viewers emotionally. She encourages close examination of her pieces, which evolve through cycles of adding, subtracting, concealing, and revealing, mirroring the natural ebb and flow of life. Collectors describe her paintings as calming, and she aims to evoke deeper connections beyond the physical.
After teaching visual art full time for over twenty years, Cathey takes pride in fostering a love of art among her students, many whom went on to pursue careers within the arts.
Cathey’s accolades include being honored by the Governor of South Carolina for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring students, the Priscilla and Ellis D. Slater Award for studying painting in France, and several Teacher of the Year honors throughout Spartanburg county. She has also been active in community art organizations.
Now retired, Cathey dedicates her time to her art practice at Dancing Ridge Studio, drawing inspiration from her natural surroundings.
